Shake off nerves, says Simpson

Paul simpson pensiveManager Paul Simpson has admitted his goal-shy Shrewsbury side must improve as an attacking force after admitting: “We’re looking nervy.”

Town were forced to settle for a goalless draw against lowly Grimsby at the Prostar Stadium on Saturday.

It means Shrewsbury have managed to find the net just 11 times in their last 11 League Two games.

And Simpson has conceded that is a record his side must work on.

“We haven’t scored enough goals and we will keep working to make sure the players relax when they get in the final third,” said the Town boss.

“We are looking nervy at home. We looked nervous and Saturday was another difficult game for us.

“We had opportunities that we could have done better with – whether it’s a shot or a cross.

“It’s having the composure when the opportunity comes to pick the right pass or finish and we didn’t have that.

“We will just keep working with them and trying to improve on the quality as much as we possibly can.

“We weren’t right going forward. As a side we kept a clean sheet and we haven’t lost the game.

“But we all know this was a game we were expected to win.”

The draw means Town are currently 10th in League Two, although they lie only two points off the play-off places ahead of next week’s trip to League Two leaders Rochdale.

And Simpson conceded his side performance didn’t warrant what would have been a crucial victory over the Mariners.

“We didn’t do enough to earn all three points,” added the Town .

“It was a real scruffy, horrible game with no tempo to it and unfortunately Grimsby got what they set out to get.

“From the first minute they tried to stop the tempo and they were successful.

“We are all disappointed because we didn’t do enough to gain all three points.”
