County set for cold snap

Monday 14th December 2009, 11:23AM GMT.

snow-topTemperatures are set to plummet leaving shivering Shropshire in the grip of a big freeze later this week.

Experts are predicting the county will be hit by snow showers, particularly on the hills, on Wednesday and Thursday.

It comes as gritters were put on alert around the country over the weekend as bitterly cold weather moved in and thermometers plunged to -2C and -3C (27F-28F) on Saturday.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said overnight cloud kept the frost at bay today and the big chill would ease until midweek. He said: “Saturday’s were the lowest temperatures over the last three days in Shropshire, but that has changed to rain and drizzle for areas like Telford and Shrewsbury.

“It will be fairly miserable, dank, cloudy and wet for the next couple of days and then on Wednesday it is set to be bitterly cold. That could bring snow showers, particularly on the hills, and again on Thursday.”

Mr Warner said the prospects of a white Christmas were “better than they have been for several years”.

“Some computer programmes are predicting it will be much milder just before Christmas, but it is just to early to say,” he said.

“We had an average-to-mild winter last year and we could be in for a rather cold one this year.”
