BA staff set to strike

Monday 14th December 2009, 1:05PM GMT.

British AirwaysBritish Airways cabin crew are set to stage 12 days of strikes over the Christmas holidays, sources said today.

Unite union members voted massively in favour of strike action in a bitter row over jobs, pay and working conditions.

Strikes will run between December 22 and January 2, said sources.

The official ballot result will be announced later but sources told the Press Association that there had been an 80 per cent turnout, with a nine to one majority in favour of industrial action.

Strikes will cost the airline tens of millions of pounds every day, hitting flights at one of the busiest times of year for the industry.

How insane are the cabin crew and unions?

We are in the midst of a deep recession, travel is down, costs have to be cut in order to get the inductery to survivie, but these throwbacks to the 70′s think they should strike.

It is bad enough that they think the world owes them a job, that they are entitled to pay rises and security (which no one else has) but to strike at a time when people are flying on holiday?

Hard working people have saved all year for a flight away at Christmas and now these idiots think they have they right to spoil Christmas for them all.

I used to support unions, no longer.

Typical ruddy Unions, hit the public at holiday times to cause major disruption and effectively blackmail BA.
Unions belong in the past along with the Labour government.

    What is going on here?

Why would BA announce this just before Christmas knowing the reaction it would create?
Why didn’t they leave it until mid January?
This is deliberately provacative by BA Management but why?

Good for them! It’s about time someone stood up to greedy employers exploiting the recession (that rich bankers created) in order to further feather their own nests. Let’s hope this forces the blinkered employers back to the negotiating table.

SuEllen, I think English Exile meant the announcement that caused the strike reaction.
