MP wants answers over recycling plan
Saturday 12th December 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
Shrewsbury’s MP is demanding answers over plans to introduce plastic kerbside collections in Shropshire and when it is due to go live.
Daniel Kawczynski, MP, has written an open letter to Larry Wolfe, head of waste management at Shropshire Council, with a list of questions over the proposed system and how it will work. The Tory MP has also hit out at plans for a £60 million incinerator in Battlefield.
Mr Kawczynski claims the incinerator scheme does not help the county’s efforts to reduce the impact of climate change.
He said he wanted to know what would happen to the council’s grey or blue wheelie bins, currently collected fortnightly and sent to landfill, once the new system is introduced.
His letter says: “Protection of the environment and environmental issues are now firmly lodged in the public’s awareness. There is much talk of climate change and the need to use resources in a sustainable and prudent manner.
“Clearly, Shropshire Council is well aware of these principles and endeavours to provide cost effective services to rate-payers to fulfil these obligations, wherever possible.
“However, it appears to me that burning household waste does not fit at all comfortably into this scenario and never will.”
Mr Kawczynski has asked Mr Wolfe which types of plastics will be collected under the proposed new collections.
He will also ask when the authority plans to extend food waste collections currently only available in north and south Shropshire, to the rest of the county.
He says: “With the emphasis for the future being to maximise recycling and composting, remove plastics and include food waste, what does Shropshire Council believe will remain to be collected in the grey bin system?”
Mr Wolfe said the council had not yet received the letter but said they would give it full attention when it arrived and would provide a response to the MP’s questions.
