Hopes of go-ahead for dogs’ home plans
Saturday 12th December 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
Plans for the £5 million transformation of a Shropshire dogs’ home to make it one of the best of its kind in the country look set to be given the go-ahead by planners.
Members of Telford & Wrekin Council’s plans board deferred a decision on the original application for Roden Dogs’ Home to go and have a look at the site following concerns about noise.
But they are expected to back a recommendation from planning officers for approval at a meeting on Wednesday night which will kickstart the exciting project.
Artist’s impressions for the transformation reveal modern glass-fronted kennels would be built which bosses claim would reduce noise and stress in dogs.
Plans are also in place to reduce the number of dogs housed on site from nearly 200 to no more than 125. It is also claimed the scheme will help more dogs to be rehomed more quickly.
Chartered surveyor Peter Napier, of Shrewsbury-based Peter Napier and Co, helped with the design of the scheme.
He said: “Dogs Trust wish to lead where others will follow in the standards that they have set in planning this project. This is a really exciting project, designed to the highest possible standards of sustainability, even down to having no heating or at least minimal heating of the floors for the comfort of the dogs.
“The driving forces behind the development have been to improve animal welfare, improve working conditions for staff and improve the visitor experience.
“The existing kennel accommodation is out of date, expensive to heat and wasteful of energy.”
The Dogs Trust has been operating the Roden Centre since 1970.
The plans board meets on Wednesday from 6pm at Telford & Wrekin Council’s civic offices.
