Festive vow by hero’s widow
Saturday 12th December 2009, 9:30PM GMT.
The Shropshire wife of a county soldier who was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan today said she was looking forward to Christmas, despite the loss of her “special person”.
Joanne Davies, 33, of St Georges, Telford, said she had been trying to get her life back on track following the devastating loss of her husband Damian.
Speaking on the first ann- iversary of his death, she said life would never be the same without Damian but she owes it to their two-and-a-half-year-old son Matthew to make sure he has a great Christmas.
Mrs Davies said: “Yes, it is so sad that (Matthew’s) daddy isn’t with us to share Christmas but because Matthew is excited I cannot help but be a little excited about seeing him with his presents on Christmas Day.”
Mrs Davies added that she was reminded about Damian’s loss by every detail of every day.
She said the couple used to wrap presents together and she missed his support.
She said: “We would make a thing of it – have the Christmas tree up with the lights on, open a bottle of wine and wrap.”
Mrs Davies said she had endured dark days following the death of her husband but had been boosted by the support of her family and friends.
