Dunfield targets Canadian cap

Rejuvenated midfielder Terry Dunfield is hoping for a twin celebration in 2010 – promotion with Shrewsbury Town and a first cap for Canada.
Despite an own goal at Bournemouth last week, Dunfield’s form over the last month since returning from a dislocated shoulder has been comfortably his best since arriving from Macclesfield in January.
The 27-year-old’s top priority is to help Town win promotion, but Dunfield is aware playing regular League One football could help him break onto the international scene.
“I have been selected on stand-by for a couple of World Cup qualifiers but I have got injured at the wrong time,” said the Canadian.
“Realistically I think to be considered for Canada I would have to be in League One because the standard is so high in Canada now.
“It would be fantastic to get promotion with Shrewsbury and then hopefully the international part of it can come along as well.”
Meanwhile, Town defender Mike Jackson is facing a crucial month in his hopes of returning to play a part for Town this season.
The former Blackpool and Preston defender has been sidelined for the entire campaign so far with a long-standing knee injury.
And a trip to a specialist this week has offered him the chance to begin his return to light training – so long as the pain doesn’t return.
“Mike has been told there is a slight improvement in the knee and he has got to start building up his work over the next four weeks,” said Town manager Paul Simpson.
“Hopefully there will be no reaction to it but if there is a reaction, he would have to have an operation.”
Jackson has not played a first team game since the 3-1 defeat to Luton at the end of February.
