Area cordoned off as scaffold falls on car
Saturday 12th December 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
An area of Bridgnorth town centre had to be cordoned off after a large piece of scaffolding collapsed and fell on a car. The scaffolding, which was about 20 metres high, was in Castle Terrace.
Fire crews closed the area to the public for health and safety reasons.
Nobody was injured or trapped in the incident which happened at about 12.40pm yesterday.
Health and Safety Executive officials have been informed and could now launch an investigation.
More than a dozen firefighters attended the scene.
A fire service spokeswoman said: “There was nobody trapped but the scaffolding was being held in place by the car.
“We just carried out an inspection. The area was cordoned off and left in the hands of the police.”
The scaffolding measured 20 metres high, two metres wide and 1.5 metres deep.
Inspector Jeremy Gregory from West Mercia Police said officers were called to assist firefighters and to ensure pedestrians stayed away from the scaffolding.
He added: “We passed the details on to the Health and Safety Executive and will be liaising with them in any investigation.”
Gwen Pettit, from the nearby Hungry sandwich bar, said: “The scaffolding is just behind us and we heard the fire brigade coming.
“They stopped outside our shop and told us the scaffolding had fallen but nobody was injured which was the main thing.
“The builders had been in here for breakfast and they were pretty shaken up.”
