Simpson seeking a clinical touch

Friday 11th December 2009, 1:30PM GMT.

Manager Paul Simpson has urged Shrewsbury Town to get clinical in front of goal when lowly Grimsby visit the Prostar Stadium tomorrow.

Town will be desperate to gain three points against the Mariners, who currently occupy a relegation spot in League Two, to propel themselves back into the play-off places.

And Simpson admits his side must have improve their conversion rate in front of goal after scoring just six times in their last seven games, not including the Shropshire Senior Cup final against AFC Telford United.

“The good thing is that we are creating chances but, unfortunately, we aren’t converting too many of them at the moment,” said Simpson.”The goals have dried up, not only with the strikers, but also across the team.”We are having good chances from set pieces which we are not making the most of, and we are taking that extra touch when the opportunities come in open play instead of getting the shot off.Performances“We know Grimsby have threats but they are in the position they are in because they have had problems so far this season.”We are at home and the onus is on us to go and win the game, and hopefully pick up where we left off with the performances against Rotherham and Bournemouth.”Leading scorer Dave Hibbert is expected to return to training today after a minor hamstring strain, but tomorrow’s game looks set to come too soon. But Craig Disley is in line for a role in the matchday squad after recovering from his own injury problems.Lewis Neal, Chris Neal, Mike Jackson and Glynn Garner all remain sidelined, while a knee problem has ruled young winger Jake Simpson out of contention. And Town will be forced to make a change at left-back where Shane Cansdell-Sherriff serves a one-match ban for accumulating five bookings.
