Opencast mining at Steeraway, Wellington. We’ve used some pictures of opencast mining in this slot recently, and that prompted Phil Hall of Steeraway, Wellington, to loan us this photo of mining which was more or less literally on his doorstep.

It shows the opencast mining at Steeraway which took place over four years he thinks it was from 1978 until 1982.

There’s a glimpse of his own home on the extreme left hand edge, centre.

Top is the M54 and bottom is Steeraway Farm. Mr Hall says the untouched area top right is soon to be mined as part of a controversial plan which has recently been given the go-ahead.
