Foggy weather conditions sparked a number of road crashes across Shropshire today as the county prepares for a weekend of freezing temperatures and the risk of wintry showers.

Fire crews were forced to remove two vehicles which were blocking a road on the Shropshire border after an early-morning collision.

The cars were involved in the accident on the A518 near Gnosall Heath at 5am. A crew based at Newport assisted Staffordshire Fire Service in removing the cars from the road.

Police were also kept busy today with a collision involving a car in Kenley, near Shrewsbury, at about 7.30am and another similar incident on the Myddle to Wem road 20 minutes later.

And West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the B4364 road at Wheathill, Bridgnorth, just before 8.30am following reports of a car which had overturned.

No-one was believed to have been injured in any of the collisions, although an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle was sent to the scene at Bridgnorth.

Following the wettest November on record, widespread frosts and isolated wintry showers are predicted for the next few days.

Daytime temperatures will be as low as 3C (37F), falling to -3C (27F) or less in northern parts of the UK.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said he expected temperatures to remain cold for the rest of the week.

The RAC warned drivers of increasingly treacherous conditions on the roads, with fog also possible.
