Roadside services plan wins support

Thursday 10th December 2009, 6:59PM GMT.

Multi-million pound plans to build roadside services in Newport, which would include a motel and restaurant, have been backed by the town’s council.

Planning permission was granted two years ago for the development to be built on greenfield land close to the junction of the A41 and A518.

Developers claimed at the time it could create more than 50 jobs. But a two-year time limit to start work has elapsed and a new planning application has had to be submitted.

It includes plans for an eight-pump petrol station with forecourt shop, 25 car parking spaces, a car wash and jet wash stations.

Permission is also sought for a 41-bedroom motel, plus 80 car parking spaces for the motel, a picnic area, and a 40-space lorry park.

The application has been submitted by Cheltenham-based developers Hunter Page Planning on behalf of the owner of the land, Denis McKoy.

The plans were backed unanimously by Newport Town Council’s planning committee at a meeting last night.

A final decision on the application will now be made by members of Telford & Wrekin Council’s plans board at a meeting expected to take place in the New Year.

Councillor Sian Walker openly applauded the plan and claimed the heavily used road was in dire need of more services.

“The A41 is one of the main roads in the country but around Newport there is nowhere for lorries to park up,” she said.
