Recycling call over Christmas break

Thursday 10th December 2009, 6:59PM GMT.

Recyclers from across Shropshire are being urged to make the most of recycling facilities during the festive break.

Waste reclamation centres will be closed on holiday days during the Christmas and New Year break and councils are keen that people visit them at other times.

Shropshire Council will close its waste reclamation sites on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The council’s regular opening hours for winter are from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and weekends.

The authority introduced new rules in November to save council taxpayers £45,000 a year by reducing the volume of trade waste tipped at civic amenity sites.

The council has banned large vans, tipper trucks and cars with large trailers and introduced a new permit system for small vans, mini buses and cars with medium trailers. Cars are still able to visit sites and people can also take small hobby trailers.

Permits are available free but have to be applied for in advance.

Cat Slaytor, from Veolia, which operates Shropshire Council’s reclamation sites, said the new rules were working well.

She added that there had been few complaints from members of the public and most people were up to speed with the regulations.

It is hoped that reclamation sites will be busy during the festive period with lots of people bringing recyclable goods.
