Wednesday 9th December 2009, 9:34AM GMT.

Mike TysonThe organiser of boxing legend Mike Tyson’s visit to Shropshire has described interest in tickets to the event as “huge”.

Promoter Mike Williams said tickets were nearing a sell-out even though the fighter’s visit to the county is three months away.

Iron Mike, a former world heavyweight champion, will appear at the dinner at the Lion Quays hotel, Gledrid near Oswestry on March 14.

Mr Williams, a Gledrid-based businessman, said: “We have been inundated with requests. Calls have been coming in from everywhere, even Belfast, with fight fans wanting to see Tyson.

“There is a huge interest and the tickets have been flying out.

“We have sold about 250 of a capacity of 340 and at this rate the dinner will be a sell-out.

“It’s Tyson’s name that is selling the tickets. He is not just of interest to boxing fans, there is a huge curiosity about him from many people.

“Even other boxing promoters have been calling me asking about his visit because I am organising the whole nine-day visit by Tyson.”

Mr Williams revealed three other boxers have been lined up to accompany Tyson at the dinner.

Two-time heavyweight champion of the world Tim Witherspoon, former world cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson and former British and European light welterweight Dave Boy Green will also be on the bill. Mr Williams said: “They are all great boxers in their own right.

“Witherspoon was champion of the world twice with a great record. I am delighted he has agreed to come to the event.

“The other two fighters are fantastic lads and I am sure will add to the occasion.”

Tickets for the evening cost between £95 and £125.

Some of the proceeds will go to the Wrexham-based Nightingale House Hospice.

Mr Williams has also arranged his first rugby event, a charity dinner at the Lion Quays on February 19.

Guests of honour will be Welsh rugby legends Merv Davies, JPR Williams and Phil Bennett.
