A Wem pub has been issued with a formal warning by council chiefs after the police raised concerns about how the premises was run. Police had applied for the licence review at the Old Post Office in High Street.

Their concerns included complaints about noise levels and broken glass littering the pavement outside.

Shropshire Council’s north area licensing sub-committee heard the review at the council offices in Wem on Monday.

Licensee Pat Crampton said after the meeting that he had no comment to make and referred all inquiries to the council.

A report to Shropshire Council claimed the pub “undermines the licensing objectives concerning the prevention of crime and disorder and the protection of children from harm”.

Police said they had logged 16 incidents at the pub since 2007.

The council’s street scene manager had also voiced concern about broken glasses from the pub, which it was claimed was a “regular occurrence”.

The report asked councillors to consider making the pub fit some type of noise-limiting device to minimise the sound of music being heard late at night.

Further recommendations before councillors included a ban on drinking outside and that customers be responsible for clearing up any broken glass.

Shropshire Council spokesman Gareth Proffitt said the sub-committee had agreed to give the pub a formal warning, add conditions to the licence and would review the premises again.
