Champ Hankey targets a third world title

Shropshire’s reigning world champion Ted Hankey has set his sights on winning a third Lakeside World Professional darts crown.
Telford-based Hankey won his second title back in January when he defeated Tony O’Shea by seven sets to six in a thrilling final at Frimley Green.
But he has now begun to step up his preparations for the 2010 edition as he looks to retain the trophy.
The 41-year-old, who is seeded No 5, will begin his quest against England’s Gary Robson on Saturday, January 2.
“I’ll spend four or five hours a day on the board every day now until Lakeside, in order to make sure I’m mentally right and physically right,” he said.
“It was bigger winning it last year than when I got the first one (in 2000) and it meant a lot more to me.
“I’d had four years of bad luck with car crashes and different things.
“My family, my wife and my mum and dad all stood by me and it was just as much for them as it was for me.
“Now I’m thinking: ‘Let’s go for a third one, I know I can do it.’
The Telford ace is in competitive action this weekend, travelling to the continent for the Zuiderduin Masters in Holland which starts on Friday.
He is in a three-man group with Scotland’s Ross Montgomery and Henny van der Ster from the Netherlands.
