Tuesday 8th December 2009, 10:55AM GMT.
The body of a man has been recovered from the Montgomery Canal at Queens Head near Oswestry, police revealed today.
The body was spotted in the water at about 9.15am yesterday. Police were notified and the body was recovered from the canal.
Police believe the man is in his 50s, but the body had not yet been formally identified.
The death is being treated as unexplained but police at this stage are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.
The coroner for Mid and North Shropshire John Ellery has been informed.
West Mercia Police spokesman Richard Ewels said today that a post mortem is to be held. He added officers were continuing with their investigations.
Fiona McDonald, from the Canal Central tea room and tourist accommodation at Maesbury Marsh, said: “The canal is quiet at this time of year because we are not in the middle of the holiday season so there would not have been a lot of boaters around.”
A British Waterways spokeswoman said: “The incident was a police matter and we had no involvement. We did not have to close the canal and it didn’t cause us any problems.”
