Wem fury at Drayton re-think

Saturday 5th December 2009, 10:28AM GMT.

Wem Town boss Dave Richards has hit out at the Shropshire FA’s decision to re-admit Market Drayton Town to the Shropshire Challenge Cup.

The two sides are due to meet in a quarter-final tie on January 9.

Drayton officially withdrew from the cup because honouring that fixture would have meant playing their scheduled UniBond League match at Grantham on a Tuesday night.

But they have been allowed to take back their withdrawal letter after a re-think, much to the Wem chief’s disgust.

“Nothing surprises me with the Shropshire FA where Market Drayton are concerned,” said Richards.

“We were thrown out last year for fielding a player who was ineligible because he hadn’t played in a league game. We owned up to it but they threw us out anyway.

“When Drayton were last in this cup two or three years ago they played an ineligible goalkeeper against Broseley but were allowed to replay the game and went on to win the competition.

“I don’t see how a team that withdraws can be allowed back, but nothing surprises me any more.”
