Room for another top store, says Asda
Friday 4th December 2009, 9:45AM GMT.
Supermarket giant Asda today insisted that even though it planned to move out of Telford Shopping Centre there was still room for another supermarket in the heart of the town.
Asda spoke out after developers Hark Apollo revealed it had found overwhelming backing among shoppers for its plans to build a new £30 million store in Telford Shopping Centre.
The store would form part of the developers’ plans to create a £1.1 billion complex in the town centre, known as The Round.
Hark Apollo wants Asda to move into the new store planned for the top of the Red Oak car park, alongside the existing store which would be demolished as part of the redevelopment.
The supermarket chain has, however, said it remains committed to plans to move to the current Telford & Wrekin Council civic headquarters site on the outskirts of Telford Shopping Centre when its existing lease in the mall expires.
A survey carried out on Hark Apollo’s behalf revealed that 96 per cent of 160 respondents supported plans for a new supermarket at the heart of the centre.
Asda spokesman Chris Morley said today: “This result clearly shows that concerns regarding Hark Apollo’s ability to attract other large multiple retailers to replace the Asda store are nonsensical.
“There is already an identified capacity for two food stores in Telford town centre.”
