Good Evans – Sean out to shine
Friday 4th December 2009, 7:01PM GMT.
Winger Sean Evans is looking forward to a reunion with an old friend when AFC Telford United host big spenders Fleetwood Town tomorrow.
Former Manchester United apprentice Evans is in line for his third Bucks outing in the clash against the promotion-chasing Codmen.
He will also have a close eye on the opposition line-up, which could include his former Old Trafford colleague Jamie Mullan.
“It’s going to be a massive game tomorrow,” said Evans. “They’re the games where the bigger players and the ones with big hearts, want to come out and impress.
“Hopefully, Rob (Smith, the manager) will give me the chance to go out impress and I will try to take it.
“I’ve got a really good friend who plays for Fleetwood, their right winger Jamie Mullan.
“I haven’t spoken to him for about a year and I haven’t told him I’ve signed for Telford yet, so that will be nice.
“It could be interesting tomorrow if we’re both playing, I’d certainly look forward to going up against him.”
Evans made his debut in the 3-1 defeat at Farsley Celtic last weekend, then won the Bucks a penalty as they beat Alfreton 2-0 on Tuesday evening.
And, despite their indifferent form of late, the Ludlow-based ace sees no reason why they cannot get back in amongst the battle for the play-off places.
“Hopefully we can get a result tomorrow,” he said. “If we do then I think we’ll be right back on the ball.
“That would get the fans right back behind us again and we should be able to kick on.
“This is a massive club, it’s a sleeping giant with a huge fanbase, and it’s striving to get back to where it used to be.
“Hopefully we can get to the Conference and push on from there and go for League football.”
Evans hopes his career is now on an upward curve after a lean couple of years.
He had seemed on the route to stardom when United swooped to sign him from Shrewsbury Town’s Centre of Excellence as a 17-year-old.
But after leaving the Red Devils in May 2008, he had a nomadic year taking in Ludlow, Aberystwyth and Cinderford before joining Stourbridge in the summer.
Trade
He has been revitalised under Stourbridge boss Gary Hackett – scoring 12 goals off the left flank – and still has faith that he could eventually return to the full-time ranks.
“At no point did I ever think I was going to become a great at Manchester United,” he added. “I just wanted to learn my trade with the best in the business.
“That should hold me in good stead to become a professional footballer. It hasn’t happened yet but I still believe I have the ability.”
