Severn Trent to inform public of water plans
Thursday 3rd December 2009, 10:26AM GMT.
Efforts to improve Oswestry’s water will be outlined by Severn Trent bosses at a public meeting tonight. The quality of the supply has sparked numerous complaints over the years.
Many residents claim it is undrinkable and concerns about the water’s taste, smell and hardness sparked an investigation by Severn Trent bosses in October.
Representatives from Severn Trent will be attending Oswestry Local Joint Committee meeting to talk about the renewal of water mains in the town and the effect this may have on homes and businesses.
Oswestry town councillor John Evans, who has played a leading role in battling for better water in the town, said: “I do hope the people of Oswestry attend the meeting to hear what Severn Trent has to say.
“There is definitely a problem with the water and we want it improved. There is a long haul ahead but at least Severn Trent are talking to the public.”
During the Severn Trent investigation in October, staff visited Oswestry and held drop-in sessions to hear more about the problems.
They also visited people’s homes and businesses to test the water. After the inquiry, the company brought in various measures.
Tonight’s meeting at 6.30pm at Woodside School will also include a presentation by Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow, who will outline spending plans for the coming year.
Committee members will also be asked to agree to grants from the group’s community chest going to Oswestry organisations.
