‘Massive win’ is boost for Bucks
Wednesday 2nd December 2009, 12:30PM GMT.
Assistant manager Larry Chambers hailed a “massive win” as AFC Telford United gave themselves a much-needed Blue Square North confidence boost.
The Bucks beat potential play-off rivals Alfreton Town 2-0 at the New Bucks Head last night, recording their first victory in four weeks.
An Andy Brown penalty and a terrific strike from Phil Trainer had put the Bucks in control at the break and they held on with ease against an Alfreton side ravaged by injuries.
“It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t a great performance and we’ve probably played better and lost,” said Chambers.
“But it was all about picking the three points up. Alfreton are struggling with injuries and suspensions but, in the next two or three weeks, they will have players back and they’ll be making signings so they’ll be a different proposition.
“I thought we played them at a good time and the win was massive for us.”
Commanding
Chambers was delighted to see his side put themselves in such a commanding position by half-time last night, but admitted he would have liked them to press home their advantage a little more.
“We got the goals at the right time,” he said. “It would have been nice to go on in the second half and get a few more but it didn’t happen for us.
“Our strikers Browny and Damo (new signing Damian Reeves) worked hard but didn’t get their rewards.
“We probably lacked a bit of quality and our decision-making wasn’t great in the final third, but it’s three points and let’s hope we can build on that.”
The one setback for the Bucks was an injury to left-back Sean Newton, who was forced to go off at half-time.
“Sean’s been struggling for a couple of weeks with his right ankle,” said the Telford No 2. “He caught it in the warm-up and it was touch-and-go whether he even started the game.
“After about 25 minutes he wasn’t right and at half-time we made the decision to put Gavin Cowan on and push Shane Killock to left-back.”
