Council vow over market hall revamp
Wednesday 2nd December 2009, 10:45AM GMT.
The £200,000 revamp of a Shropshire indoor market by designer Sir Terence Conran is still on course despite a major funding problem, councillors have heard.
Oswestry’s Powis Hall won a national online competition run by the Times and the Mydeco design firm for the revamp by Sir Terence and fellow designer Tara Bernard.
But the ambitious project looked in doubt after Mydeco bosses informed the hall owners Oswestry Town Council that they did not expect a large market hall to win the competition and the £50,000 prize money would not pay for all the work.
In a bid to save the project, the council matched the £50,000 from its own reserves.
Council bosses have been holding urgent talks with other potential funding bodies.
And at a meeting on Monday councillors heard Sir Terence’s team was now working on the design of the new look market hall.
Town clerk David Preston said: “We have made aware by Mydeco that the building specifications and drawings have been passed on to Sir Terence Conran and Tara Bernard and we are expecting an early update.
“The anticipation is that we will receive a concept design that will be the basis for both trader and community consultation
“This is clearly an exciting time for Oswestry market.”
Mr Preston added: “However, we have reminded Mydeco of the limitations on current funding available but we remain committed to making the scheme work.”
