Overseas player ban fails
Tuesday 1st December 2009, 2:00PM GMT.
A proposal to ban overseas players from Shropshire’s top cricket league has been defeated.
Albrighton had tabled a motion to ban overseas professionals from playing in the Marston’s Shropshire Premier League from next season.
But clubs voted to stick with the existing rules by eight votes to six at last night’s annual meeting at Reman Services.
“All the clubs had been told to come to the meeting with a mandate after discussing it with their members so there was no debate,” said league chairman Mike Robinson.
“I had no strong views either way on the issue. I could see the reasoning behind both arguments but it’s always good to maintain the standards as high as possible in a league.”
Robinson revealed that, had the vote been tied at 7-7, overseas players would still have been permitted to play because tradition dictates that the chairman’s casting vote retains the status quo.
It is the third time Albrighton have tabled a motion to ban overseas professionals.
Meanwhile, last night’s meeting also saw Gordon Smith of Bomere Heath chosen as vice-chairman.
