Mayor of town dies suddenly
Tuesday 1st December 2009, 2:25PM GMT.
The Mayor of Bridgnorth, Councillor Mac Griffiths, has died suddenly at work of a suspected heart attack.
He passed away yesterday morning after collapsing at a meeting of the Dudley Crime Partnership.
The mayor had only recently been diagnosed as suffering from angina.
One of his final civic duties was to turn on Bridgnorth’s Christmas lights last Friday.
Councillor Griffiths, 62, was a detective superintendent with 30 years’ service with West Midlands Police in Brierley Hill and the Black Country.
After retiring from the police, he set up Cradley Heath-based CCTV security firm Cougar Monitoring with fellow former officer Michael Holder.
He lived with his wife, Julie, in Quatford, near Bridgnorth. The couple have two children and four grandchildren.
Brian Jones, who was mayor of Bridgnorth last year, today said: “It’s a devastating loss for everyone who knew him and for the whole town.
“He had everyone’s respect, conducted himself well and was a man who made things happen.”
