Visitors flock to castle to enjoy medieval fair
Monday 30th November 2009, 10:38AM GMT.
Grey skies failed to stop visitors flocking to a colourful weekend of medieval madness in a south Shropshire market town.
The Ludlow Medieval Fair attracted scores of festive visitors on Saturday and Sunday in the town’s castle.
Falconry, fire eaters, jugglers and giants were all part of the attractions and during Saturday evening visitors enjoyed a flame-lit walkway into the castle, which was festooned with greenery.
Hundreds of stalls were selling gifts, jewellery, food and drink and many stallholders donned medieval dress.
The Knights and Ladies of the Plantagenet Society were on hand to entertain the crowds along with carols from the Quire.
Organiser Prue Dakin said they were delighted with the “absolutely amazing” number of people who turned out for the special weekend despite the less-than-perfect weather.
She said today: “Numbers were definitely up on last year, I think a lot of people are looking for things to do within the UK. People came from as far away as Edinburgh and Plymouth.
“Quite a lot of people had a package deal with two nights accommodation and put us in as part of the tour.”
