County men suffer drop

Monday 30th November 2009, 12:27AM GMT.

Shropshire’s men have been relegated from group five of the Winter Tennis County Cup – but there was brighter news for the women.

Despite home advantage, the men lost all three of their matches at Shrewsbury’s Welti Centre.

Beaten 7-2 by Staffordshire in their opening game, Shropshire were then out-gunned by Leicestershire on Saturday as they were beaten 8-1.

And a miserable weekend was completed when Ian Gilespie’s side lost 5-1 to Suffolk yesterday, with the final three rubbers not played with the match already decided.

Shropshire ladies consolidated their position in group five after last season’s promotion thanks to a nerve-jangling 5-4 success over Herefordshire & Worcestershire.

Shropshire had lost their first two matches at Tipton, 6-3 to Northants and 5-4 to Derbyshire.
