Shrewsbury out to spring Aston surprise
Friday 27th November 2009, 7:58PM GMT.
Shrewsbury hope they can maintain their magnificent record against Aston Old Edwardians when they host the Midlands 2 West (North) leaders tomorrow (2.15pm).
Aston have won eight our of eight so far this term, but have traditionally struggled at Sundorne Castle.
And Shrewsbury fly-half Mattie Morris believes his side could just spring a big upset on their own turf.
“They’ve gone really well so far and had a great result against Lichfield when they were still leaders a couple of weeks ago,” he said.
“But we’ve got a great record against them over the years.
“I remember a few years ago when they got promoted, we beat them home and away. We’re their bogey side, if you like.”
Shrewsbury have outside centre Tom Dickson back from injury, while George Daniels returns in the pack and Jim Pugh at full-back.
Dan Harrison and Alex Taplin are relegated to the bench, while Will Jones will turn out for the seconds.”
Bridgnorth welcome two key first team players back from injury for their trip to Old Saltleians.
Matt Farrngton returns at full-back while the experienced Ken Milkins slots into the back row.
“The are two of the first choice players on the list,” said chairman of selectors Simon Pennington.
“Matt’s been out for six weeks and Ken has only played three or four games all season. Hopefully they will make a big difference.”
Looking ahead to tomorrow, Pennington added: “This is a test of where we’re at because they are a team we’ve got to be looking to beat, even at their place.”
Ludlow have a tough trip to Lichfield, who match their own record of seven wins from eight.
And director of rugby Phil Norton insists all the pressure will be on the hosts.
“We can afford to lose one or two away games but you have to win your home games if you want to be in contention, so it’s probably more important to them,” he said.
“If we win then it would be a major one for us and would set us up for the rest of the season.”
The Linney men have Nick Wood and Matt Young returning in the front row, while Tony Oliver comes in at prop and Theo Hodnett moves to hooker. Jake Parkes returns to the second row.
