Officials set to throw out waste plans

Friday 27th November 2009, 1:30PM GMT.

Controversial proposals to build an incinerator in Telford could be thrown out by planning chiefs, it was revealed today.

Thousands of campaigners are a step closer to winning their battle against Sita UK’s plans for the facility on the edge of the town with Telford & Wrekin Council planning officers now recommending they should be given the thumbs down.

The proposals for an energy from waste incineration plant next to Granville landfill site were submitted by the firm in September last year.

More than 3,000 people signed a petition put together by protest group Telford PAIN and the council also received 250 individual complaints from residents.

Objections were also received from Friends of the Earth, Telford PAIN, five parish councils and Mark Pritchard, Wrekin MP, and David Wright, Telford MP.

And people power looks to have struck the first blow in winning the battle, with council planning officers recommending refusal of the scheme.

The officers will be urging members of the council’s plans board to follow that recommendation at a crunch meeting to decide on the application on December 7.

Planners say the incinerator would be “visually harmful” to the area and have a negative impact on the future recreational value of the site.

Column: “… could be thrown out..”

Well make you mind up! Are they ‘set’ on throwing it out or is there just a remote possibility.

We need it as the Greenies can’t tell us how to recycle plastic. Johnny Foreigner can do it, so why can’t the Brits?

The next thing is these people will be moaning about land fill. There is just no pleaseing some people.
