Thousands of people got into the Christmas spirit as the festive season kicked off across Shropshire.

Families packed Shrewsbury’s Square and Oswestry’s Festival Square for the towns’ annual Christmas lights switch-ons.

In Shrewsbury the town was lit up by former Emmerdale actor Matt Healy — aka bad-boy Matthew King — and his fellow stars from the pantomime Peter Pan.

Oswestry’s ceremony was compered by town councillor Betty Gull who introduced pupils from four local schools who sang Christmas carols.

Tonight it will be Telford’s turn to enter into the festive spirit with Britain’s Got Talent finalists Stavros Flatley due to perform switch-on duties in the town’s shopping centre.

The event will be held outdoors, with the festivities beginning at 4pm in the Ash Grey car park near House of Fraser and Marks & Spencer.

It is rather important to me that I generally find myself ensconced in a certain Public House during the airings of so-called Saturday evening televisual ‘entertainment’ such as Britain’s Got Problems hence I have not seen Mr.Statley and his ‘act’ though I would venture to hazard a bet that it’s almost certainly c**p.
