Riza raring to go for Town
Thursday 26th November 2009, 12:19PM GMT.
Omer Riza has pleaded for the chance to re-ignite Shrewsbury Town’s campaign, declaring: “I know I will score goals.”
On the day the loan deals of Jamie Devitt and Waide Fairhurst were extended until the start of January, Riza revealed he hoped to have pushed his way into contention for a starting role.
The forward has yet to score for the first team but has made an impact from the bench in the last two games, providing the cross for Graham Coughlan’s equaliser against Bury last week and then having a last minute shot cleared off the line in the 2-1 defeat at Hereford.
The 30-year-old is hoping for the chance to impress from a central striking berth after a frustrating year which has seen him sidelined by a suspension imposed by the Turkish FA and an ankle injury sustained at Dagenham.
“When I first came back, I was struggling physically,” said Riza, who played the entire 90 minutes for the reserves in yesterday’s 1-0 home victory over Sheffield United.
“My legs felt very heavy when I first came back but with each game my legs are getting stronger and I have got a lot more staying power.
“I’m pushing for a start all the time and it’s up to the gaffer.
“I will keep working hard and hopefully, when my chance comes, I will take it.
“I am desperate for that first goal but it will come and once I start playing, I know I will score goals.”
Meanwhile, manager Paul Simpson has agreed a deal with Hull and Doncaster respectively to hold on to Devitt and Fairhurst until the new year.
But the chances of other arrivals and departures on today’s loan transfer deadline day appeared slim.
- Shrewsbury’s FA Youth Cup third round tie with Hull has been scheduled for Monday, December 7 at the Prostar Stadium. Kick off will be 7pm.
