Officers to target car crime at shops

carcrimew.jpgPolice are to ramp up security patrols in one of the main retail areas in Shrewsbury in an effort to tackle vehicle crime over the festive season.

Local policing officers are to carry out extra patrolling duties around the main shopping sites in the Harlescott area.

A spokesman from West Mercia Police said they were anxious to get key security messages over to the thousands of motorists visiting the area, especially in the run-up to Christmas.

Officers will be keeping a close eye on the main car parks, targeting vehicles where shopping and valuables have been left on open view inside.

Scott Smither, Harlescott’s local policing officer, said: “We will be maintaining a high-visibility presence, especially in and around the retail area car parks, including Matalan, Brantano, Charlies and AMF Bowling.

“Vehicle crime is a constant menace, especially at this time of the year as people embark on their Christmas shopping in earnest.

“We want to promote vehicle safety as much as possible, and will be chatting to motorists and making our presence felt.

“We will be putting across crime prevention messages while hopefully reassuring people at the same time.

“Advice leaflets will also be left on windscreens where property is visible inside. We want the public to be security conscious and to take basic measures to protect their vehicles and contents.”

    Cheers Shropshire Star Chavney’s listening!

Avoid Matalan, Brantano, Charlies and AMF.

Go to other retail parks and look for the messages on the windscreens, but avoid the high-visibility patrols.

    Lovely! Message received – thanks.
