Good Evans for the Bucks?
Thursday 26th November 2009, 12:09PM GMT.
AFC Telford United were today close to completing a deal to make Shropshire-born left winger Sean Evans their newest recruit.
Chairman Lee Carter revealed that Evans should finalise his move at training this evening – with current club Stourbridge having waived the need for seven days’ notice.
Providing the paperwork is completed without any hitches, the 22-year-old will then go straight into Telford’s squad for Saturday’s Blue Square North clash at Farsley Celtic.
Evans began his career at Shrewsbury Town’s Centre of Excellence before a sensational move to Manchester United in April 2004 for a “substantial” fee.
But, despite becoming a regular in the Old Trafford reserve side, he was released in May 2008 and then had unsuccessful trials at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Barnsley.
He turned out for several sides last season – including hometown club Ludlow, where his father Mark is president, as well as for Aberystwyth and Cinderford.
But he really got his career back on track following a summer switch to Stourbridge, and he has proved a revelation for the Zamaretto League club.
He played a major part in Stourbridge’s run to the first round of the FA Cup, his performances earning him a trial at League Two side Grimsby Town – though no deal was forthcoming at the Mariners.
“It’s hard when you get a rejection like he had from Manchester United, but he came to us in pre-season and he’s done very well,” said Stourbridge boss Gary Hackett.
“He’s scored goals for us – he’s into double figures, which is a great return for a wide man – his attitude is spot on and he’s very fit.
“We had a great run in the cup and created a bit of interest, and he’s one that a lot of people have been having a look at.
“I think we’ve been very good for him and he’s been very good for us, and he goes to Telford with our best wishes. He’s good enough to step up and I’m sure he will do well for them.”
