Driver hurt and horse killed in collision
Wednesday 25th November 2009, 10:16AM GMT.
A driver was injured and a horse killed in a collision on a busy Shropshire road today.
The incident happened on the A458 Shrewsbury to Welshpool road at Ford at 7.45am.
Inspector Jeremy Gregory, of West Mercia Police, said: “We were forced to put in some diversions which caused great hold-ups during rush hour.”
Police said the road was reopened by 9am. The driver’s injuries are not believed to be serious.
A spokeswoman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We sent one ambulance to the scene and conveyed one patient to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
“The extent of their injuries are unknown at present, but sadly the horse died.”
She added the driver, who was in a Ford Focus, was a man in his 60s who was believed to have suffered a neck injury.
She said he was immobilised on a spinal board with a neck collar and taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
The man told the ambulance crew he was driving along when the horse ran out of a field in front of his car.
Meanwhile, firefighters were called to a car fire in Shrewsbury town centre early today.
The engine fire happened in Castle Foregate at 6.30am and one crew from Shrewsbury attended the scene. Nobody was injured.
The crew used breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to put the fire out and the stop signal was received at 6.53am.

So were there 3 escaped horses? Two ran towards me on my side of the road just opposite the Cross Gates pub and thankfully one of them was white. This was about at 7.35.
Meanwhile Andrew any chance of putting up the West Felton cow rescue feature?

That’s scary, presumably they’d escaped from a field nearby? I hope the other two that escaped got put back safely, such a shame that one was killed. Sympathy to the driver, too, that must have been a horrible accident and probably nothing he could do to avoid it.
