Shane Killock scores for Telford Shane Killock scores for Telford
Larry Chambers blasted a “clueless” performance as AFC Telford United bowed out of the FA Trophy, and admitted: “We’ve taken two steps back.”
The Bucks went down 2-1 at home to Stalybridge in their third qualifying round replay last night.
Shane Killock had given them a dream start with the opener inside three minutes, but they then went on to produce one of their worst displays of the season.
That was a major frustration to assistant manager Chambers, especially after a month in which they had shown signs of getting back to their best.
“We feel like we’ve taken one step forward and two steps back,” said Chambers. “We were clueless in the second half – lacking any passion, desire or know-how.
“I thought performances had improved recently, and I didn’t see that one coming.
“People were abdicating responsibility and doing their own thing instead of what was right for the team.”
Telford’s players stayed locked in the dressing room with Chambers and manager Rob Smith for 40 minutes after the final whistle.
“We just had a debate,” revealed Chambers. “People were told some home truths.
“It wasn’t a witch-hunt, but it was myself and Rob telling them what we thought – that the performance was unacceptable. Players have to play for their own pride if nothing else.”
The defeat will cost the Bucks in terms of prizemoney, though it is the impact on the supporters that is of most concern to chairman Lee Carter.
“The goodwill that has been generated over the last month has slipped away in 80 minutes,” he said.
