Pool reopens after repairs
Tuesday 24th November 2009, 9:01AM GMT.
Shrewsbury’s public swimming pool today reopened after work to repair a collapsed water pipe was completed.
Shropshire Council said the two-and-a-half day closure cost the authority thousands of pounds in lost revenue.
The council said the Quarry Swimming and Leisure Centre took an average of between £1,500 and £2,000 a day, with the centre being closed Saturday afternoon, all day Sunday and yesterday.
Tony Power, business support manager at Shropshire Council, said: “The centre takes in the region of £1,500 to £2,000 a day, with some seasonal fluctuations.
“The closure was unavoidable due to an old mains water pipe bursting, which feeds under the centre.”
A spokesman for the council confirmed the pool was open for business as normal. “The swimming pool in the Quarry opened as scheduled today and will be running as normal,” he said.
The collapse was discovered at the swimming and leisure centre in the town on Saturday afternoon.
The problem caused water to leak across a large section of Victoria Avenue – the road which leads to the centre.
Paul Clark, central area leisure manager for Shropshire Council, added: “The leak was discovered on Saturday and the centre was closed on Saturday afternoon because there was no water available in the building.
“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience.”
