Give us the chance to win it again – that was the plea from Shropshire’s Gang of Four at the official Crosfield Cup party.

The quartet of selectors – Dennis Lewis, John Nash, Mick Jones and Bob Moss – guided the county to only its second British county championship triumph in the last game of their three-year term in office.

A 44 chalk home-and-away win over Yorkshire in the senior final ended Shropshire’s 35-year wait to raise the Crosfield Cup again.

The valuable piece of silverware took centre stage at Saturday’s celebration night at Wem USC, when the Gang of Four made their plans clear.

They will be standing for re-election at the county association’s AGM in February, with high hopes of retaining the trophy – if they get the carry on vote.

“We agreed to make the statement at the celebration night because we have all been asked what we want to do – and it seemed the appropriate place to do it,” said Lewis.

“Subject to ratification at the county AGM we would like to serve for another three-year term.

“A lot of players have indicated that they may not wish to carry on playing for the county if there were major changes so we felt we had to make our position clear.”

Glyn Herbert, who captained the home team that put Yorkshire in their place at Meole Brace, described raising the Crosfield Cup as the proudest moment of his bowling career.

Away team skipper Derek Wright praised all the playing squad, especially the reserves, for doing so well all season to get the job done.

“It was all about the players – they were fantastic all season and it was a real pleasure to be around them and see the team spirit they had,” added Lewis.

“It was a good night on Saturday – the only sad note being that not everybody was able to attend.”

In fact only 19 of the 37 players named in the official programme were present.
