Champion walkover for Jones

Tuesday 24th November 2009, 6:00PM GMT.

boxing_glovesShropshire boxer Tony Jones has become a Midlands champion – without even entering the ring.

Shrewsbury ABC’s Jones has become the regional champion in the senior novice ABAs at under 54kgs on the back of three byes.

The 18-year-old, who lives in Brookside, Telford, was due to fight Birmingham City’s Anthony Jukes in the Midlands final at Coventry on Sunday.

But Jukes withdrew late on Saturday to leave Jones frustrated – but understandably delighted.

“Tony is pleased to be through but he didn’t want to become a Midlands champion without boxing,” said Shrewsbury’s head coach Brian Robb.

Jones will be back in action on Sunday when he heads to Retford in Nottingham to take on a yet un-named opponent for a place in the national quarter-finals.
