Anger over theft from chapel roof

Tuesday 24th November 2009, 11:31AM GMT.

Thieves stole lead from the roof of a chapel at Leominster’s cemetery, allowing rain to get in to the building, ruining its organ, furniture and carpets.

Funeral director Bill Rowlatt, who leases the Chapel of Rest from the local authority and reported the matter to police, today hit out at the thieves.

He said: “I am furious. This was a despicable and sick act, showing total disrespect for bereaved families and their loved ones who are at rest there before a funeral.”

The theft happened sometime between about 5pm on Friday and 8am on Monday.

Police urged anybody who witnessed the incident or may know who stole the lead to contact Constable Trudi Burgess at Leominster Police Station on 0300 333 3000 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
