Town train hopes

Monday 23rd November 2009, 12:57PM GMT.

railway-track1Trains could be running through Oswestry within the next five years, bringing a huge economic boost to the town.

It follows a decision by railway enthusiasts to join forces in a landmark agreement.

The Cambrian Railways Society and Cambrian Railways Trust members have unanimously voted to unify in a bid to restore services after more than 40 years.

This development has been co-ordinated by the Cross Border Tourism Development Group on behalf of Shropshire Council, with the intention of seeing a fully operational heritage railway operating out of Oswestry by 2014.

This is to be achieved as a new, unified organisation called the Cambrian Heritage Railways.

Nigel Davies, of the CBTDG and acting chairman of the new Cambrian Heritage Railways Ltd, said: “The potential economic impact of a return of steam to Oswestry and its surrounding area is of course substantial.

“Towns such as Bridgnorth and Llangollen are perfect examples of how important developments such as this are to the local economy and there is now a real desire to work together as a team to achieve this.”

Following nine months of careful negotiations between the trustees and management committee of the two organisations, the eventual resolution was decided upon and members voted unanimously in favour of the move to join forces on Friday.

The resolution will see the combining of the Cambrian Railways Society and Cambrian Railways Trust under the Cambrian Heritage Railways Ltd.

Mr Davies added: “This decision was absolutely vital to the longterm development of a working heritage railway between Gobowen and Blodwel Junction.

“The fact the vote was unanimous is a clear indication that the members of both organisations are tired of the past disagreements and want to see trains in Oswestry once again, even if it could be at the expense of both the Trust and Society.

“With this in mind, both groups should be applauded for their foresight and co-operation in moving forward with these proposals and hopefully it’s now full steam ahead in delivering a project which will see immense economic benefits to the area.”
