Snooker stars start qualifying for Telford
Monday 23rd November 2009, 1:00PM GMT.
The race to join the world’s 16 best snooker players in Shropshire for next month’s Pukka Pies UK Championship begins today – with some of the sport’s biggest names involved.
Qualifying for the second biggest tournament on the snooker calender started this morning at Prestatyn.
And former world champions Steve Davis, Ken Doherty and John Parrott are amongst the players aiming to come through qualifying to reach the final stages, which will be played at Telford’s International Centre from December 5.
That trio of stellar names are in action later in the week, along with Shropshire’s Adrian Gunnell – who begins his quest to win the two matches he needs to reach his home town tournament on Saturday.
The biggest name in action at Prestatyn today was Thailand’s former world No 3 James Wattana.
One crowd-pleaser who won’t be appearing at Telford is Jimmy White.
The Whirlwind was due to appear in qualifying, but his appearance in I’m A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here has ruled him out.
