A good week for Shrewsbury Town

Paul Simpson and staff celebrate Graham Coughlan's goal
In a good week for Town fans, the Shropshire Cup returned to its rightful place while Captain Marvel rescued a point against away-day specialists Bury, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
In a game that lacked quality, Town gained revenge on their local rivals by defeating Telford 2-1 in the Shropshire Senior Cup Final.
Some fans have said they were not bothered by the result, while others have said it means more to Telford than us, but I for one was delighted to see Simpson take the competition seriously and play a strong enough side to defeat our non-league opponents.
Backed by a fantastic and vocal away following Town just about showed their superiority on the pitch, while off it there was only one winner in terms of fans getting behind their team.
It was good to see Dunfield and Riza both get games under their belts following injury. Both have divided opinion amongst fans. I for one am still not convinced they are good enough to play for Town, but they will have a chance to prove me wrong in the coming weeks.
The game also provided Bright with a chance to prove his doubters wrong and, although he scored a rare goal, he didn’t do a lot else against Telford.
I was also disappointed at his lack of acknowledgement to the fans when he was substituted. They gave him a great ovation. He may have been booed by some fans in previous weeks, but instead of sulking about it he should do all he can to prove the boo-boys wrong.
On Saturday, and in awful conditions, it was left to captain Coughlan to score a last minute equaliser following a disappointing game against Bury.
Town are still not reaching their potential or the form of earlier in the season when they went on an excellent unbeaten run. Simpson has had to do without key players due to injury and has had to change his team most weeks, which hasn’t helped.
The bottom line is we are still in the promotion hunt and if we can spend some money in January on two or three players that will give us the boost we need until the end of the season. At the moment we seem short of quality on the wing when players like Neal are missing.
A thought must go to goalkeeper Chris Neal who once again has been struck down by injury. With Phillips leaving, it was chance for Neal to cement the number one jersey, but instead he faces another frustrating time on the sidelines. Whether the fact he hasn’t played too many first team games in his career is causing his injury problems, I am not sure.
Following his heroics against Telford I am confident young keeper Arestidou can do a good job for us while Neal is injured, although he will need to work on his kicking.
Next up for Town is Tuesday night’s local derby against struggling Hereford. Town will once again be backed by a brilliant away following which should spur them on to further bragging rights and local derby success.
At this stage in the season has Simpson still got the fans’ backing and do you think he is the right man for the job?
He’s got mighty support considering the bad luck he has had with injuries, but he needs to be active in January or, in my view, questions will start to be asked of him.

James, great away support Tuesday and good singing from all fans especially yourself!!.
Although Bright has been booed the fans applauded him on Tuesday and he didnt even respond. Some way to winning the fans over.
At least Elder applauds and looks interested, Bright to go.
The jury for me is still out on Simmo. I feel sorry for him as it looks like he hasnt been given the funds to improve the squad.
If Simmo doesnt have the funds something should be said as currently we think he has an endless pit.. resulting in high expectations from fans.
Off to Hereford tommorow for 3 points.

I regularly follow all NZ players around the world & I am very suprised when I read the comments about Kris Bright. My observations have been that he has been made a scapegoat on more than one occasion & even people who dont actually attend games are sticking the knife into him. Maybe he was wrong not to acknowledge the fans but you can hardly blame a guy who for about three weeks was the subject of unwarranted attacks on certain forums. He would probably be the first to admit he has not delivered the goods so far. While you may not think he is right for your club maybe you should look at who signed him. If he gets more than 10 minutes here & there when the team is playing badly he will prove you wrong.

Its really no suprise Kris Bright doesnt applaud people who have just spent two weeks crucifying him on forums & booing at games. There is no doubt he hasnt performed but what do you expect when he only plays ten minutes here and there, usually when the team is playing badly. He will prove you all wrong whether it be at Shrewsbury or another league 2 team.

Shrewsbury Town fans will never learn about booing their own players. I’ll never forget them doing it at WEMBLEY in 1996. Dreadful supporters.
