Inventor comes up with superb win for McCain

Shropshire horse racing trainer Donald McCain is toasting a sensational win with little-fancied Inventor at Ascot.

The McCain-trained horse made a laughing stock of his 15,000 guineas auction price by winning on his debut in a hot event yesterday.

The Robert Giles Agencies Introductory Hurdle was supposed to be a stroll in the park for Manyriverstocross if you believed the bookmakers and Alan King’s big hope was the 1-2 favourite following a recent success at Chepstow.

Inventor (14-1) was rated higher than Manyriverstocross when trained on the Flat by Brian Meehan, but did not prove popular at last month’s Horses In Training Sales at Newmarket.

Cholmondeley-based McCain and his owner Jon Glews chanced their arm and it paid off as he picked off eventual third Manyriverstocross and King Olav close home under Paul Benson.

Glews said: “I was just having dinner with Donald and I mentioned that I liked him a lot. I think a couple of big yards came to look at him but rejected him and he looks a bit cheap now.”

Totesport offer Inventor at 25-1 for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham with Coral and William Hill going 33s.

McCain was not in Berkshire but added: “We’re delighted. We picked him up cheaply at Newmarket as he had a couple of issues but we took a punt.

“There have been no problems since we have had him and we just wanted to see where we stood today, but hopefully there’ll be a fair bit of improvement left.”

l McCain was also toasting a winner at Kelso, with Wymott winning the opening race.
