WI may run own show after West Mid demise
Friday 20th November 2009, 3:00PM GMT.
A new show for Shropshire’s WI members could be held in the county next year – because of the collapse of the West Mid Show due to a cash crisis.
The Women’s Institute has traditionally held competitions for a number of classes at the Shrewsbury show.
But its plans went into limbo when the Shropshire and West Midlands Agricultural Society, which runs the show, was placed into voluntary liquidation just weeks ago after more than 120 years.
It is understood it owes up to £160,000 to a number of creditors, with a creditors’ meeting scheduled to take place next month.
Plans have been mooted for a replacement show, but now Shropshire Federation of WIs has revealed it could hold its own show for its members next year.
Pauline Greenhough, county chairman of the federation, said it was “sad” that the West Mid Show looked like being no more.
She said: “We do want to have some sort of show, but plans are at a very early stage. The West Mid Show used to be in May, which suited us very well, and then they moved it to later in the year.
“It might be in May but there’s quite a bit to do. It’s very sad that there’s no West Mid Show anymore. That’s why we feel we have got to do something else.
“Next year might be experimental but hopefully we can do something.”
She said a meeting is due to take place soon when further details may be released.
Schedules have already gone out for the meeting, although no firm date or location have yet been set.
Members are being urged to have their say and to start preparing their entries for the event.
And it is hoped that more WIs will take part than ever before with it being a new venture.
