Telford target Trophy success

Bucks_logo1AFC Telford today targeted another memorable FA Trophy run as they prepare for a “tie of the round” trip to Stalybridge Celtic.

The Bucks have been drawn against their Blue Square North rivals in the third qualifying round of non-League’s premier knockout competition.

Rob Smith’s side came within a whisker of reaching the Wembley final last season, falling at the last hurdle in a two-legged semi-final with York.

And, while Smith accepts his side have the toughest possible start, he would love to embark on another Trophy adventure.

“We really enjoyed last season and it would be great to go on another long run,” said the Bucks boss, who revealed he expects to add a new face to his squad on Monday.

“It’s the last cup competition we are involved in so it’s important we get a positive result tomorrow.

“If we can get a full squad out, I feel as though we can be a match for anybody.

“We know it’s a tough one at Stalybridge. We have not only drawn a Blue Square North side but also probably the one on the best run of form at the moment.

‘But if we can maintain our recent form and keep playing as we have been, I’m sure we will be okay.

“I think it has got the makings of a really good game and it could be the tie of the round.”

Telford have fond memories of Stalybridge having chalked up a 3-0 league victory there at the start of the season. But Smith insists that will count for nothing tomorrow.

“Stalybridge haven’t made too many changes to their squad since then,” Smith added. “But the reason it means nothing is because that victory was at the start of the season and it’s going to be very wet up there tomorrow so the conditions will be totally different.”

Carl Rodgers and Andy Brown are expected to shrug off minor knocks.
