Simpson moves to sign Button
Friday 20th November 2009, 1:52PM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town today raided one of the Premier League big guns to solve their goalkeeper shortage ahead of tomorrow’s League Two clash with Bury.
Manager Paul Simpson has agreed a deal with Tottenham to take Dave Button on loan until January 2.
The 20-year-old has already had loan spells with Bournemouth, Dagenham, Luton and Crewe and has represented at England under 19 and under 20 level.
Simpson was forced into the market after Chris Neal was ruled out for six weeks with a broken finger.
“We have been on the phone since Monday and it’s a really, really difficult position to try and fill,” said the Town boss.
“But we are delighted to get David in. He is very highly thought of by the staff at Tottenham and he has had League Two experience.”
Simpson, however, has admitted Button is not certain to start tomorrow with Andreas Arestidou pushing for his Football League debut after an impressive display in Tuesday’s Shropshire Senior Cup victory over AFC Telford.
“David has been told he has got to compete with Andreas for the starting role,” added Simpson.
“The performance of Andreas on Tuesday has give me a nice little problem over who starts and that’s something I’ve got to think about between now and 2pm tomorrow.”
The game represents a repeat of last season’s play-off semi-final which Town edged on penalties – and Simpson is expecting a similarly tight encounter.
“Bury were a good side last season and they are again this season and I expect them to be up there come the end of the season,” he added.
“We are in a good position in seventh place without really flying yet so, as the players come back from injuries, hopefully we can push on.”
Leading scorer Dave Hibbert and Paul Murray are expected to be fit after missing the Telford game, but loanee Jamie Devitt faces a fitness test on a sore knee.
Jake Robinson could recover from an ankle problem to take his place on the bench.
