Town chase keeper as injuries take toll
Thursday 19th November 2009, 3:35PM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town were today assessing their catalogue of injuries as they begin preparations for Saturday’s visit of Bury.
Town had just 14 available senior players for Tuesday’s Shropshire Senior Cup victory over AFC Telford, and were forced to call up two youth teamers – Will Richards and Hakan Duyan – to have a full compliment of substitutes.
The main concern centres around the goalkeeping department, with injuries to Chris Neal and Glynn Garner leaving 19-year-old Andreas Arestidou as the only fit ‘senior’ keeper.
Manager Paul Simpson remains on the hunt for a loan shot-stopper, but a glut of phone calls had failed to yield any success by this morning.
Simpson is hopeful that leading scorer Dave Hibbert, who has been troubled by an Achilles tendon problem this week, and midfielder Paul Murray will both be fit for Saturday’s visit of Bury.
Striker Jake Robinson has missed the last two games with an ankle injury, although he is targeting a return to training before the weekend. Hopes of loanee Jamie Devitt recovering in time to be available for Bury hang in the balance as he battles against a sore knee, while Lewis Neal and Jake Simpson seem certain to miss their third successive game with calf problems.
Meanwhile, Simpson remains optimistic that he will reach an agreement with Doncaster and Hull to extend the loan deals of Waide Fairhurst and Devitt respectively.
Their initial one month agreement for the pair comes to an end after next Tuesday’s trip to near rivals Hereford.
But Simpson said: “We are hopeful we are going to get extended but I have come to realise that, until they have signed, it means nothing.”
l Lincoln manager Chris Sutton has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association following his behaviour in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Cheltenham.
Sutton was sent to the stands amid ugly scuffles at Sincil Bank sparked by the dismissal of Aaron Brown.
