Flooding? Oh well…
Thursday 19th November 2009, 7:29AM GMT.
Blog: My return from holiday this week (two weeks doing absolutely nothing, apart from a loving family, dogs, child, wife and fish, since you ask) posed few problems when it came to sniffing out stories, writes James Shaw.
Of course, the first day is always tough, but not so this week.
Following days of heavy rain, floods were back on the agenda, but unlike 2007, there was little rush to catch the raging torrents.
Because there were none.
But even if Shropshire was covered in flood water and homes were being washed out, I suspect the reaction may have been different anyway.
When I filmed the floods of 2007, there was a sense of shock, bewilderment and ever fear that nature had at last given us a ruddy good slap on the wrist.
We were told to be prepared for a repeat — and well prepared at that.
When I returned to some locations 12 months later, there was a sense of apathy about the whole issue – “not more floods”, I was told on a number of occasions.
So if the River Severn had burst its banks on Monday, I would have been filming a very different scene.
Quite apart from the fact that many people are resigned to the fact that floods will affect us all once again, I will bet that many people have learned the lessons and stocked up on neccessary supplies.
Mother nature has taught us a lesson and many of us have listened.

It just seems more of a coincidence thast since the water company’s were sold off the incidence of flooding has increased. coincidence? or lack of investment over profit
