Fears sparked as capsized canoe spotted
Thursday 19th November 2009, 1:05PM GMT.
An upturned canoe was spotted floating downstream in the River Severn in Shrewsbury today, sparking fears that a canoeist could be in serious danger in the swollen river.
A police helicopter was scanning the river and although the canoe may have been swept away from moorings by the currents, there is concern someone could have got into difficulties.
Police spokesman Richard Ewels said: “It was first seen off Sydney Avenue in Castlefields at around 10.10am. There is a safety concern, especially as the canoe was upturned with an oar floating alongside it.
“It could be the oar is tied to the canoe but it might also indicate someone has fallen into the water not long before and got into trouble in the strong currents.
“We are using the helicopter to check along the river in the Shrewsbury area but nothing untoward has so far been sighted.”
Police are anxious to hear from anyone missing a canoe and urging residents living near the river to check, if they have a canoe moored on the water or stored nearby.
Mr Ewels said: “We really need to hear from anyone whose canoe is missing as soon as possible. Please contact Shrewsbury police station on 0300 333 3000 as a matter of urgency.”
The canoe is described as large, for two people, and dark green. It appears to have a length of rope attached which may have snapped. It was recovered by police in the Sundorne area.
