Badgers could be to blame for weakening a canal embankment on the north Shropshire border which collapsed, flooding a nearby house and fields, it was claimed today.

According to locals the creatures are thought to have made setts along parts of Cornhill Embankment on the Llangollen Canal, near Bettisfield.

On Tuesday, the canal was breached when British Waterways engineers were using a piledriver to perform routine re-strengthening work, but part of the embankment collapsed.
